Popular Hiking Trails in American Fork

After a long week pushing your body through work, errands, and everything in between, your muscles probably have a few things to say about it. The American Fork area sits right at the doorstep of some of Utah's best hiking, where you can stretch your legs on mountain trails while your body works through whatever tension you've been carrying.

When you're done putting in those miles, Body Balance Massage specializes in helping active people recover. They're a trusted massage clinic with licensed therapists trained in deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and sports massage, all designed to help hikers and outdoor enthusiasts feel better after pushing themselves on the trail.

Tibble Fork Reservoir Trail

Tibble Fork sits about 15 minutes up American Fork Canyon, where a network of trails loops around the reservoir and climbs into meadows dotted with aspen groves. The main loop runs about 3.5 to 4.6 miles depending on which route you take, gaining elevation through oak and pine before opening up to views of Box Elder Peak.

You'll cross streams, pass through sections where wildflowers bloom in early summer, and if you time it right in fall, catch those aspens turning gold. The reservoir itself is a spot where people fish or just sit for a bit before heading back down.

Battle Creek Falls

This one's close, just over in Pleasant Grove, maybe 10 minutes from American Fork. It's a quick hit if you only have an hour. The trail climbs about 0.7 miles up Battle Creek Canyon to a 50-foot waterfall that runs year-round thanks to natural springs. Kids can usually handle it, though the last hundred yards or so get steep and rocky.

The falls themselves are cool (literally) on hot days, and some people even stand under the spray. It's popular, so weekday mornings are your best bet if you want some space.

Stewart Falls

Head up toward Sundance and you'll find the Stewart Falls trailhead near Aspen Grove. This two-tiered waterfall drops 200 feet down the east side of Mount Timpanogos, and the 3.6-mile roundtrip hike to reach it winds through pine and aspen forests with views that get better as you go.

The trail actually goes downhill for the second half, which is nice on the way there, less nice on the way back. Spring runoff makes the falls impressive, but they flow all season. Just know it gets crowded on weekends.

Grove Creek Trail

Grove Creek Canyon sits just east of Pleasant Grove and offers a steep workout up the west face of Mount Timpanogos. The trail starts wide before narrowing into singletrack that climbs above the creek through switchbacks. You'll pass a couple of waterfalls viewable from the trail, though you'd need to bushwhack a bit to get close, and the path eventually crosses a small bridge before continuing up through pines and aspens to a meadow with views of the valley below.

Most people turn around at the bridge around 2 miles in, making it a solid 4-mile round trip. Just know there's some exposure on narrow sections with cliff bands, so watch your footing.

Timpanogos Cave National Monument

This isn't exactly a traditional hike; it's more of a workout with a payoff at the end. The 1.5-mile paved trail gains 1,065 feet as it switchbacks up to the cave entrance, where you can tour three connected caverns filled with formations.

The cave stays at 45 degrees year-round, so bring a jacket even if it's blazing outside. You need to reserve tickets ahead of time through Recreation.gov, and the monument is only open seasonally, typically May through October.
